How To Draw An Inkling Girl
Hey guys! So i decided to make this little tutorial to help people out and to show you all how i make my drawings!
I may not be the best artist in the world or the best at making tutorials but i tried my best. Reminder that these are my drawings so no stealing this tutorial or any of my drawings on my page, i don't mind you guys inspiring yourself with my art or trying to learn from it but please do not steal, if you want to use my art please ask first, i've already seen people trying to steal from me and it's not fun, it just creates fights and it sucks.
This tutorial is also how I, SABRINA FERLAND, draws an inkling, so it may be different from how others do it. So without futher ado, let's get started!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 1: drawing the head
First thing that you need to do when you draw a character is to start by the head. The shape of the head can be oval, circular, heartshaped and more but in this case i drew an oval.
After drawing the shape of the head you add in lines to your liking to make cheeks, a chin and other facial features.
Once that is done erase the unnecessary lines.
You can then proceed to start drawing the hair/tentacles, i chose the standard long hair. Don't be afraid to get a bit out or in of the head shape to draw the hair and bangs and make sure that the top of the hair follows the curve of your head.
Then draw the ears, which are slightly pointy like elf ears, since those are how inkling ears look like and draw the hair in the back of the head.
After doing that erase the unnecessary lines once again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 2: drawing the face
For the face most artists will draw lines shaped like a cross in the middle of the face to know where to put the eyes, the nose, the mouth, etc. I don't usually do that but i made an example of it right here.
When i draw the face, i always start by drawing the nose first since, i find it more easier this way to know where to place the eyes and everything and it is the easiest thing to draw. The nose is usually placed in the center of the face, in the middle or near the middle of the cross. Since this is more of a cartoonish style and less realistic the nose is a simple line, sometimes i make it round or pointy.
After drawing the nose, i head for the eyes. Which i try to draw not too big like in animes and not too small so that we can atleast see them. The shape is usually an oval or water drop shape, where it is more smaller towards the nose and large towards the cheeks.
Next step is drawing the pupils and the black part around the eyes ("mask"). To draw the "mask" just follow the curves of the eyes and smaller lines above the nose like if it was glasses.
(Optional) I color in the mask to remind myself to color it black later and it also helps me get an idea of how it looks like with the black, seeing if it looks good. You don't really need to do this step but you can if you want to.
Add a mouth and eyebrows. You can make the mouth however you want it. You can make it big or small, open, happy, sad, surprised, smirking, etc. As for the eyebrows, inkling eyebrows are rather thick and circular/oval shaped and you place the eyebrows depending of the emotion that the inkling has.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 3: Body and clothes
Draw the neck, shoulders and torso. Since its a girl, the body can't be too large and needs to be curvy but not too curvy since it is a kid.
Draw the legs
Draw the shape of the feet/shoes. I personally prefer drawing boots since it is so much more easier and simpler to draw.
Start drawing the arms and hands. If you have trouble drawing hands (i feel you, i struggle with it too), you can always use your own hands or a friend's hands as a reference or you can look up references yourself, which are really easy to find.
Erase the unnecessary lines
Draw in the clothes and the details of the clothes that you want
Add detail to the hair/tentacles
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 4: final touches and coloring
You have now finished making the drawing with the pencil. The following steps is if you want to make it more clean and polished and if you want to add color.
Once you are done the drawing with the pencil, make sure that you haven't forgotten anything and take a pencil filled with black ink and retrace all the lines with it. It's ok if you don't have the same thing as mine, what matters is that the end of it is thin so that it won't make thick lines because if the lines of ink are too thick it coukd ruin your drawing. Be careful while making this step because one small mistake with ink and it's ruined, its basically impossible to save your drawing when it comes to ink, you can't just erase it like with pencils.
Once you are done retracing the lines, let the ink sit for a few minutes so it can dry up then grab an eraser and erase all the pencil marks, to make your drawing look clean and pretty.
After that you can add the colors you like/want to the inkling! If you have multiple tones of a color (example: multiple tones of green, like lime green, pine green, jade green, etc) and you are unsure what tone is best take a different sheet of paper and do color tests on that paper by doing little scribbles with the coloring pencils to see how the color looks like and if it fits your desires.
I have nothing much to say about coloring since it is you guys that decide what colors to use. The only thing i will say is that the tips of the hair are a darker tone than the top of the hair, so make sure to grab a light and dark tone of a color to draw that and do some blending with both colors by gently rubbing circles of the darker tone into the lighter tone. If you don't do blending it will look like this, which isn't the greatest.
Once you are done coloring and blending you are finished your drawing!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This tutorial was really long to make but i hope it was worth it and that it helped you all! If you guys have any questions feel free to ask in the comments!
